Best Time to Visit Guajira Colombia

La Guajira Colombia

La Guajira is one of Colombia’s hidden treasures that is located well off the beaten track. Situated on the northeastern coast of Colombia, this lesser-known paradise borders the Caribbean Sea and Venezuela. Home to unique, beautiful, and somewhat alien landscapes, this coastal destination offers a one-of-a-kind adventure in a land full of amazing contrasts. Here you’ll discover coastal Caribbean desert covered in giant sand dunes, salt flats, cactuses, crystalline rivers, a green oasis amid arid desert (Macuira National Natural Park), and gorgeous barely touched beaches.

Home to Colombia’s largest Indigenous population, this remote department is also a place of great cultural and spiritual importance. The Wayuu people populate the whole of this desert region, moving freely between Colombia and Venezuela as dual citizens. Here you can reconnect with spectacular nature while exploring the fascinating culture and customs of the Wayuu. Step away from modern life and visit a Wayuu Rancheria where you can listen to amazing stories, learn how to dance, and try some of the traditional local food.

When Does it Rain in La Guajira, Colombia?

Similar to other cities on the Colombian Caribbean Coast, the rainy season is from May to November. While it generally rains more during these months, the weather is still warm, and the tropical sun often keeps the rain from hanging around too long. It rarely pours and will never rain for the whole day. In other words, don’t let this be a deciding factor in when to book your trip! As well as visit the beautiful beaches, here you can also experience a unique tourist adventure. You’ll have the chance to visit places that are sacred to the Wayuu, such as Cabo de la Vela (often considered to be «nirvana» or heaven by this community).

Dry Season:

December to April is the dry season in La Guajira when it rarely rains. It is an excellent time to visit and appreciate the natural wonders in the region. It’s also a great time of year to visit the Pink Flamingos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, declared a National and Cultural Heritage of Colombia in 1992. Although these majestic birds can always be found in the park, the best season to visit the flamingos in La Guajira is during the dry months.

Advice for Traveling to La Guajira Colombia

Traveling to La Guajira during the holidays and other important dates can often be more expensive. Unlike Bogotá, Cartagena, Medellín, and other big cities in Colombia, there are no large industries in La Guajira. The local economy is primarily based around mining and agriculture, with tourism also forming an important part of the economy in more recent years.

The price of Wayuu bags (colorful bags that are representative of the Indigenous community) and accommodation in Rancherias (an authentic Wayuu hotel) can often be greater during the high season. Prices will also vary depending on whether you find yourself in a more touristy area or not.
